Abergavenny Thursdays - 2
Crickhowell - 0
ALTHOUGH winning their local derby against Crickhowell, the Abergavenny Thursdays left more than one chance go begging and should have won much more convincingly than the final score-line reflects.
As it was the Thursdays went ahead after ten minutes when Peter Smith received a good through ball and fired past the Crick keeper leaving him with no chance.
A breakaway by Crickhowell was thwarted by Thursdays' keeper Tamlin who made a fine save to stop the visitors from equalising.
And with just minutes remaining of the first-half, Matt Heritage bagged Thursdays second to give them a comfortable lead going into the interval.
Into the second-half and the game was played in the same pattern as the first, with too many chances not being capitalised upon.
The Thursdays made their maximum number of substitutions but still were unable to score.
Shane Barry was one of the Thursdays' subs to come on but was sent off after five minutes following a disagreement with the referee.
Nevertheless it was a much-needed third win in nine games for the Thursdays, who will look to add too this tally when they continue their Gwent County Division Three campaign with an away trip to Race next Saturday.
Blaenavon Blues - 3
Cadoxton Barry - 2
BLAENAVON Blues progressed to the fourth round of the FAW Welsh Trophy for the third consecutive season with a fine victory over Cadoxton Barry of the South Wales senior league.
The Vale of Glamorgan club arrived at the Co-op field full of confidence after an unbeaten start to their season, but found the Blues in a confidant mood themselves.
And it was the Blues who took the lead when Mike Waite produced some superb close control in the corner to beat three men and put a pin point cross into the box for the Waite's midfield partner Liam Powell to score with a deft header.
The game ebbed and flowed with both sides attacking at will and giving the three-figure crowd something exciting to watch.
Cadoxton Barry were soon back on level terms when the Blues lost the ball in midfield a hopeful ball down the right channel and the visitors front man took one touch and hammered the ball in the bottom corner leaving the Blues keeper Smith no chance.
The Blues started the second half in a slow manner and allowed Cadoxton Barry to dominate the open fifteen minutes, but without creating too much the closest the visitors came was when a cross come shot grazed the Blues' cross bar.
The Blues started to come back into the game with Darren Harris getting his foot on the ball and causing the visitors defence problems every time he attacked them.
It was on one of these attack's that Harris beat two defenders and took the ball around the advancing keeper and got his shot in as the keeper took the big striker down. The shot come back off the post and Harris was first to react and beat the two retreating defenders to put the Blues 2-1 up.
The Blues were soon 3-1 up when a blatant handball in the box was seen by the referee who had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.
Powell who had missed a penalty last week, again stepped up and this week scored with ease.
The game should have been sown up by the Blues but all credit to Cadoxton Barry who came back at the Blues in the last ten minutes and scored through a goal mouth scramble with a goal that was hotly disputed if the ball had crossed the line at all.
In the last few minutes of the game Blues keeper Smith was beaten to a ball over the top by the advancing striker who lobed the keeper only for defender Matt Cox to clear the ball against the cross bar and then into the safety of the stand.
The Cadoxton Barry supporters were adamant that the ball crossed the line but with the referee so far up field there was no way he could make that decision.
The Blues will be happy with a solid performance even though they were far from their best on the day, this weekend the Blues travel to Abertillery Excelsior's for a 3pm kick off, if any supporters would like to travel with the club to the game meet at market street for 1.30pm.
Govilon - 2
Chepstow Town - 3
IT was another defeat on the trot for Govilon who narrowly lost out to Chepstow Town on Saturday.
Govilon gave a home debut to goalkeeper Andrew Llewellyn recently signed from North Gwent League outfit, Rhymney, and started brightly but found themselves a goal down inside the first ten minutes when Chepstow's Matt Owen was first to a long throw deep into Govilon's half and headed past Llewellyn.
Govilon drew level midway through the half when Dean Morgan was brought down in the box and stepped up himself to convert the spot kick.
Govilon almost took the lead when Morgan placed his shot from distance but saw his effort go agonisingly wide.
Craig Norman playing in the heart of defence powered a header over Chepstow's bar before it was Govilon's turn to defend and Llewellyn was quickly off his line to snuff out a Chepstow raid.
However another attack in the next minute paid dividends for Chepstow as referee Cottrell awarded them a penalty which Simon Jones put away in fine style.
As half time approached and with Govilon forcing pressure Chepstow broke away and scored when Mark Dunn produced an excellent lob over the advancing Llewellyn, to increase their lead. Govilon thought they had scored when a Jamie Wilkins screamer off the outside of the boot thundered against Karl Baynton's post as they went into the interval 1-3.
In the second half Jamie Laurent went on a forward run and forced a fine save from Baynton, and moments later McCarthy headed over before Laurent was inches wide with a curling free kick.
Ten minutes from time Morgan was again brought down in the box and as in the first half stepped up to convert his own penalty, but this proved to be not enough as Govilon ended the match vanquished.
Govilon are seeking a club manager to take responsibility for the off-the-field activities of both their Gwent County and Gwent Central side. Anyone interested should contact club chairman Rob Francis (07999438578) or first team manager Steve Morgan (07739542327).
On Saturday, Govilon travel to the Coed Eva area of Cwmbran before returning home the following Saturday, for the local derby against Mardy, who are currently sitting second from bottom in Gwent County Division One after Liswerry took them to the cleaners 5-2.
