Penrhos is the place to be again this weekend (May 13/14) with not only regular favourites Woodlands Farm and the Old Vicarage opening their gates to visitors but also a new garden on the National Garden Scheme roster, Tandderwen.
Tandderwen is situated between the other two, so there’s no excuse not to visit all three.
The family garden, which is popular with children, stretches to three acres of natural garden around an early pioneering Eco House. The garden is being developed with nature in mind and is sympathetic to the landscape.
Wooded areas with beautiful mature trees and wild native spring flowers give way to open spaces with views of the Black Mountains. There are a variety of old apple trees, areas of long grass, a beautiful summer house, wildlife pond, a young orchard and a small but well-established wildflower meadow.
The Old Vicarage and Woodlands Farm need less introduction, but are always worth a visit. If you are looking for a conventional, but perfect, country garden but also enjoy creative garden design, then the ‘combination’ is a treat not to be missed.
The Old Vicarage has a series of skillfully crafted gardens surrounding a beautiful 150-year-old (1867) Victorian Gothic house, which invites you to explore, as the eye is drawn from one garden into the next.
With sweeping lawns, a summer house and formal garden, two charming ponds and a kitchen garden all enhanced by imaginatively placed pots, this gem is one to allow plenty of time for.
Woodlands Farm is unique in its design and is built to entertain, with hidden nooks, paths and a water feature that invite you into its hidden spaces.
An Acer walk, sculptures, a viewing platform within a modern ruin - all the easier to see the wonders below - the parterre garden, pavilion, striped bothy and eco credentials make the experience exceptional.
These three lovely gardens are opening from 2-6pm on Saturday (May 13) and Sunday (May 14) at a combined price of £6.50 (although an additional donation would be welcome at Tandderwen). As usual children go free and there will be teas available at Woodlands Farm. Tea proceeds will go to a heart defibrillator and the local church repairs.
