ABERGAVENNY'S very own chairman of the board Owain Davies, recently captained a squad of local young chess stars to glory in the Welsh Junior 2010 Inter Town Team Championships.
Held in Merthyr, Monmouthshire entered an Under Nine and Under 11 team to take on the best that West Wales and Cardiff and Vale had to offer.
Both sets of teams squared up to the challenge at hand and performed out of their skins to come first in their section, with each player winning a souvenir medal to keep.
The U11s won the John Delahunty Trophy - a cup in memory of a popular Cardiff player who died tragically young.
Our Lady and St Michael Primary School pupil Owain Davies was Captain of the U11 team.
Monmouthshire Junior Chess organiser Kevin Thomas said, "I am extremely proud of all the children that took part. In 2009 we were second in each category, but this year we were in front after the firs
ENDSt round and increased our lead as the day progressed.
"Owain was an inspirational captain - winning all three of his games on the top board."
Any children interested in playing chess can contact Mr. Thomas on 01600 712290, or email [email protected]">[email protected]. There is a Junior Chess Tournament for children aged 6-11 at the Grange in Monmouth this Sunday. There are also plans to start a Junior Chess Club in September.
