Abergavenny Carnival and Parade has been saved by a local contractor, after the organisers found themselves facing a challenge at the last second. Chris Evans, chairman of the Carnival, was informed only last week that in order for the road closures to go ahead, they would need someone accredited to lay down the signs. However, the local authority claimed they had no staff available due to the overtime that was required over the cycling festival last month. This put Chris into quite a difficult situation, as it meant he has to spent days searching for someone available to lay down the signs during the parade. Chris said, "We knew we could get access to the signs themselves, but apparently we not accredited to actually put them down. "We searched high and low, and attempted to get the town council on board to help us, but we really thought the parade would not be able to go ahead this year. "We were told by the police that we could have laid them and gone through in a form of protest, but we wanted to do it by the book in order to cover our own backs." After conversing with Brian Cleary from Monmouthshire highways, and Councillor John Prosser from Abergavenny Town Council Chris was contacted by cycling festival organiser Bill Owen, who told him about a local contractor who may be able to help. Chris said, "Bill told me about Ian Dando from ALD Plant Hire and Civil Engineering Surfacing Contractors who might be able to lay the signs for us. "I quickly got in touch, and he told me that he would be able to do it, and in reality, completely saved the carnival. "I was worried that I would be spending this week informing people that the parade would not go ahead, but luckily due to Ian, we are able to have things running smoothly again. The Abergavenny Carnival and Parade will be running as planned on Saturday July 12 in Bailey Park with the parade running through to the town from Baker Street to Brewery Yard, starting at 12 noon as planned. The Carnival in Bailey Park will run all day from 9am to 5pm.
