A village post office famously burgled some twenty years ago, has once again fallen victim to the same crime.

Police at Abergavenny are appealing for information following a burglary at Grosmont Post Office in the early hours of Wednesday morning, in which a safe containing around £3,000 of post office money was stolen along with around £5,000 in stamps and cash.

Owner, Richard Brierly, who lives on the premises, awoke on Wednesday to find that thieves had accessed the building through a kitchen window.

He told police that neighbours had seen four people getting into a white hatchback car at around 2am but thought nothing of it.

The stolen safe has since been found in a disused barn near Cross Primary School.

It is not the first time Mr Brierly has been the victim of a burglary at the post office, having suffered facial injuries following violent attack on the post office more than 20 years ago.

A Gwent Police spokeswoman said: "Officers in Abergavenny are appealing for information following a burglary at the post office which occurred sometime between 12.30am and 7.30am on Wednesday, October 9.

"A safe was stolen containing a significant amount of cash.

"A small white vehicle was seen in the area at around 2.30am - officers are appealing for anyone who saw this vehicle or anyone who has information relating to the incident to call 101 quoting log 63 09/10/13."
