David Davies MP was one of a trickle to vote for Prime Minister May’s botched Brexit deal when it came to parliament, last week.

With MPs gunning down May’s withdrawal agreement to leave the EU by 391 to 242, local MP David Davies opted to back the government.

Despite the Prime Minister securing late legal assurances advising that the controversial ‘backstop’ mechanism would not trap the UK into a permanent customs union, MPs killed the deal last Tuesday night, plunging parliament into chaos.

May’s deal improved on the last historic loss in which a record 230-majority pestled that vote down back in January. But a majority of 149 still crushed the government’s ‘meaningful vote.’

Mr Davies, long considered a Brexit hardliner, said “I am a strong supporter of Brexit but I have always thought that some form of compromise might be the only way forward given the divisions in Parliament and in the country so I have supported the deal.

“There is clearly no wish to compromise in or out of Parliament. Remain supporters want to ignore the referendum and stay in the EU and leave supporters want to be completely out by the end of March. I campaigned to leave the EU and stood on a manifesto with a commitment to support Brexit and I will vote accordingly.

“Taking the option of a no-deal Brexit off the table would make it even harder to get any kind of a deal and I will not support this.”
