ABERGAVENNY'S Brewery Yard was officially opened this week.

The £3 million pound regeneration was marked with a celebration of dance and music.

The town's mayor was there along with Love Zimbabwae's David and Martha Holman and local schoolchildren danced around the May Pole.

The development features glazed canopies and includes space for 74 market stalls, four terraces, new public toilets, a cafe, 96 parking spaces and a piazza. Artwork, designed by Welsh artist Howard Bowkett, includes a row of barrel pillars with 12 timber seats dotted throughout the site and there is also poetry displayed on the walls.

The new building's design was inspired by the former brewery building, which occupied part of the site until it was demolished in 1960.

Monmouthshire council hopes housing the market close to a cafe and public art will create a continental market atmosphere.
