THE PROPOSED skate park for Abergavenny will also provide use for BMX riders with work due to start on the project 'as soon as possible'.
Abergavenny Councillor Douglas Edwards asked the cabinet member for Leisure and Culture, Councillor Liz Hacket Pain at last week's full council meeting, if the skate park would provide for the leisure use and enjoyment for BMX bikers given the success of the British Olympic team in Beijing.
Councillor Hacket Pain answered, "There are five distinct disciplines one of which is in the Olympic Games.
"Knowing we have the Olympics coming to London, the skate park can be used for BMX so the children could use it, so you never know, there may be a champion in Abergavenny.
Councillor Edwards responded by giving a time line for the skate park development.
"Fifteen years ago Monmouthshire Borough Council made a commitment to provide Abergavenny with a skateboard park.
"Ten years ago this council took up this commitment and agreed to implement this promise.
"Nine months ago the planning committee approved the planning application.
"Five months ago the youth a King Henry VIII Comprehensive School together with the youngster in year five and six at our three primary school voted by 62 percent to 38 percent that Abergavenny needed a skateboard park.
"A few week ago this council agreed to use Section 106 money to fiance the acoustic fence.
"In view of this calendar of support can you tell me, what is the lowest quotation of the cost to build the skateboard park; is the design the same as the planning permission given in January; if not what is different and when are you commencing to build?"
Councillor Hacket Pain told the council that there was no change in the design and added that the project was out to tender and it was hoped work would begin as soon as possible'.
She said, "I know it is what the young people of Abergavenny want, it has gone on for a long time."
