MONMOUTH MP David Davies is celebrating after being crowned MP of the Year.

Mr Davies picked up the honour at the annual Welsh Political Awards at Cardiff City Hall on Tuesday evening.

Chairman of the judges Dr Denis Balsom, who edits the authoritative reference work The Wales Yearbook, said the judging panel was particularly impressed by the way in which Mr Davies has established himself as the new chairman of the Welsh Affairs Committee.

"This position has always previously been held by a Labour MP and, in the context of a Coalition Government, presented particular issues of a Conservative chair requiring pragmatic and consensual leadership," said Dr Balsom.

"We are delighted to recognise the way in which David Davies has assumed these responsibilities. He has brought fresh direction and purpose to the body, with incisive investigations and reports that reflect the characteristic directness of the MP for Monmouth".

Speaking after the presentation, a delighted Mr Davies said: "I see this award as a reflection of the hard work of every single member of the Welsh Affairs Committee.

"The committee's membership comprises MPs from all parties and I think it's very important that we put aside our political differences and work together for Wales, which is exactly what we've been doing.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed my role as Chairman and I hope to be able to continue for some time to come".
