discarded litter and drunks urinating through their letterboxes are just some of the problems residents in a quiet street in Abergavenny have to endure.
Members of the Neighbourhood Watch group in Victoria Street attended the public session of Abergavenny?Town Council recently to voice their outrage at the anti social problems they are forced to endure at the hands of thoughtless members of the public
During the public question time resident Bonita Kelly told councillors that she and other residents were concerned and fed up of the anti social behaviour which goes on apparently unchecked near the town's library corner and in close proximity to their homes.
She said, "When we have had our meetings a lot of the focus is on the anti social behaviour problems residents are being forced to put up with.
"For instance, in the library square, there have even been cases of drunks urinating through letter boxes and the area is always littered with rubbish there due to the fact there are no there bins at all."
Some residents claim that the raised flower beds erected some time ago tend to attract groups.
"The flower beds are lovely but they present a huge problem because they are often used by people walking home after spending the night in town. They use the area for using drugs and urinating. We also can't understand that the council has seen fit to put four benches in the area but not one rubbish bin. People come and sit in the square area to eat their lunch and they bring chips, cans and once they've eaten their food they look around and there's no where to put the rubbish.
"We know money has been spent but if the beds were taken down, it would solve part of the problem.
"There's a lady living who has had to put a blackberry bush there to stop people climbing up the walls and getting in her garden. Please, just give us bins and help us sort this out," said Ms Kelly.
Residents have also expressed their disappointment that although three options costing between £38,000 and £56,000 are being consulted on for the development of the area if the proposed new town library is built they have been told that there is no money available to put bins in the current library square.
Ms Kelly told councillors that just a small amount of money could ensure that the area is kept as clutter free as possible and could make life easier and more pleasant for residents.
The Chronicle also received a letter this week from another Victoria Street resident, S Evans who highlighted the lack of of bins in the area.
"For 15 years the authority has said it is unable to install bins in this area. Reading the minutes of a local neighbourhood watch, I found out the reason was because the council would have to pay someone to empty them."
"Now in the library plans for the redevelopment of the square are on show and it now includes litter bins - just how on earth will we pay to have them emptied," said S?Evans.
After being contacted by The Chronicle, Tim Bradfield, Monmouthshire County Council's recreation office said that he would contact Abergavenny Town Council to discuss the provision of a litter bin in the area"
