ABERGAVENNY coaching assistant Sean Jones won the category for Assistant Coach/Leader of the Year at the recent Tennis Wales awards night held in the Liberty Stadium.
Jones began his coaching career as a volunteer tennis leader at Abergavenny Tennis Club and has since progressed to obtain his UKCC1 Coaching Assistants award and will be shortly sitting the UKCC2 course.
Jones is one of the many Abergavenny coaches and assistants who make the weekly Friday Junior Night such a success, and also assists with the mini tennis programme and holiday camp sessions.
Nominated by Head Coach Robert Wedlake for his commitment and popularity with members and parents, Jones hopes to build on his success by furthering his coaching career and the club would like to congratulate him on his fine achievement.
Jones recently organised a Friday night friendly doubles match between juniors from Abergavenny Tennis Club and Brecon, where club member Robin Skinner has been leading coaching sessions.
Six juniors from each club enjoyed the match, which was the first time competing for many of the juniors.
On the Welsh tournament scene, Abergavenny U10 player Dan Taylor won his first knockout title at the Gwent Junior Open, held at Allt Yr Yn LTC in Newport.
Taylor has been training at Abergavenny Tennis Club for six years and is a regular competitor on the Tennis Wales Mini Green circuit as well as events in South West England.
Head Coach Wedlake was particularly impressed with the result for such a young player, and also with fellow competitor Samuel Hay who is new to the Tennis Wales circuit.
The clubs midweek ladies second team played their final match of the season and finished in style with a 4-0 victory over Usk.
Sue Taplin and Emma Goode played as number one seeds, with Noni Heritage partnering captain Caroline Morgan at number two.
This capped a successful season for the ladies who had entered the league for the first time.
