Swansea - 0
Abergavenny - 3
WITH relegation already confirmed it was a relaxed Abergavenny team that made the trip down to sunny Swansea for the last league match of the season.
With the home team just shading the first half, captain Pete Bartlett decided on a change of formation for the final thrust in the second.
With South Wales Under 17 goalkeeper Luke Rees providing a solid goal-mouth presence to deny the home attackers, Bartlett took it upon himself to spearhead the attacking force.
Not used to playing outfield, no-one quite knew what effect this decision would take, but this second half produced some of the most memorable moments of the season.
Many moves were started from deep by the defensive line of Kevin Phillips, Ed Treasure and Geraint Davies feeding the wide men Ben Evans, Duncan Melville and Tom Johnson.
Subsequently Aber's confident passing and movement began to create great space and pull the home team in all directions.
Chances were created and the home keeper was forced into a series of saves from Anthony Clements, who was looking to finish off another season as top club goal scorer.
A particularly well worked move down the right between Treasure and Johnson resulted in the award of a short corner. And with a carefully thought out routine, Bartlett drove a powerful shot right into the corner of the goal to leave the defenders and keeper defenceless.
Further pressure came down the left with Melville linking well with Clements who unselfishly allowed Bartlett the simplest of tap ins for his second.
However, it was the final play of a memorable second half that will long be etched on the memory of all those present.
Fine play down the left by an ever athletic Davies fed Bartlett unmarked at the top of the circle. Taking his time to line up the shot, Bartlett undercut the ball into the roof of the net for arguably the goal of the season.
With the league season now over the club would like to thank the captains of both the first and second XI - Paul Harrington and Pete Bartlett for all their organisational prowess this season.
Abergavenny hockey club members are advised that the club AGM will take place on April 24.
