Millions who lost their lives in World War One will be honoured by events held in Abergavenny as Armistice Day approaches.
Councillor John Prosser, Monmouthshire’s Armed Forces Champion, will witness the unveiling of two commemorative quilts, and a plaque in honour of the fallen, on Friday, November 11.
One hundred and thirty pupils from across Monmouthshire put together the quilts which feature pictorial events from the Great War. The unveiling will be held at the town hall at 11.45 on the day.
Bailey Park will also play a part with the commemoration of a Centenary Field Plaque which will honour the lives of millions who perished in World War One.
The plaque will be unveiled at 12.30pm by the Fields in Trust charity which works with the Royal British Legion across the UK on similar events.
Councillor Prosser said, “In this centenary year of the Battle of the Somme, I am delighted that the people of Abergavenny and Monmouthshire will be able to commemorate the sacrifices made by those who have fallen on behalf of their country.
“I am very pleased that the youngsters of Monmouthshire will be playing a major part in these commemorations, and our lovely Bailey Park will be protected in perpetuity.”
Earlier in the day, Councillor Prosser will represent the council at the town’s annual Armistice Day ceremony. Maroon rockets will be fired in the grounds of Abergavenny Castle at 11am and again two minutes later to mark the traditional period of silence.
The weekend of remembrance will continue on Sunday, November 13 with the traditional parades in local towns with the Abergavenny commemoration leaving the town hall and marching to the war memorial in Frogmore Street led by the Abergavenny Borough Band.
Ahead of that there will be a Service of Remembrance at Llanfoist Cemetery Chapel on Sunday November 6 at 2pm to remember the troops who risk their lives to keep ours safe - past, present and future.
Candles and memorial tags will be provided, with tea/coffee served afterwards.
