WHEN Abergavenny Round Table spotted a request on social media for ribbon to highlight a little boy’s battle with cancer, they responded by handing over enough to wrap the whole town.
Hearing of little Jacob Jones’ battle with a cruel and aggressive form of cancer called neuroblastoma, big-hearted members came up with 333 rolls of ribbon - enough to make more than 5,000 bows to adorn cars, doors and windows.
The bows will now be sold to supporters in order to raise funds for the two-year-old to travel to the USA for potentially life-saving treatment.
At present, Jacob’s family are waiting for the results of tests to discover if the cancer has spread. The hope is that chemotherapy will reduce the size of the tumour enough to allow surgeons to operate.
Jacob’s dad, Alwyn Jones told the Chronicle, ‘Doctors have diagnosed Jacob with neuroblastoma, it is a rare cancer and carries a high chance of relapse after the tumour is removed. If he does relapse the chances of survival are significantly reduced.’
The family have launched an appeal to raise £250,000 in order for Jacob to travel to the USA for the administration of cancer chemopreventive agent, difluoromethylornithine (DFMO).The treatment aims to prevent relapse but is not available on the NHS.
Matt Lane, of Abergavenny Round Table commented, ‘This is a local boy who needs the community’s help. We thought the best way to support this cause was for us to buy the ribbon for them.
‘We found a supplier and bought £500 worth of red ribbon. We’ve got 333 rolls in total and if our calculations are correct then it should enable them to make somewhere in the region of 5600 bows and should raise around £11,000 to help Jacob.
‘Obviously the real task is down to the girls making the bows - Siany Probert and Jayne Shields who made the appeal for ribbon and we’ll be leaving it in their capable hands. It would be great to see a bow on the front every vehicle in the area, showing their support.’
