The Abergavenny episode of new BBC1 series ‘Street Auction’ will be aired on Wednesday October 5 at 11am.
Hosted by Paul Martin of ‘Flog It’ fame, the 15-part series features a variety of locations across the UK, bringing together a street and a community for a major fund-raising effort.
Prior to the event, neighbours in the Highfield Crescent area had been asked to donate unwanted and unloved items to be sold at the ‘pop up’ auction. Local businesses also offered items for sale.
Everything from an up-cycled hatstand and a set of goalposts to meat hampers and meal vouchers eventually went under the hammer.
The auction in turn formed part of a street party with stalls selling cakes, bric-a-brac, books and plants and family entertainment provided by a magician, a rock choir, cyclists and local rugby and hockey clubs.
In total the event raised more than £900.
There’s a twist at the end of each episode when one of the organisers, secretly nominated by the community, becomes the main benefactor of the money raised on the day.
In this case it was Sue Jones, driving force behind Crafty Women, a joint initiative between Monmouthshire Housing Association (MHA) and Arts Alive Wales to provide creative opportunities for women.
Sue was presented with a new laptop and promised a place on a future arts training course.
