Pill Harriers Rfc - 28

Abergavenny Rfc - 45

AFTER two high-scoring consecutive wins, Abergavenny are sitting pretty on top of the Division Three East tree, with a confidence in their performance that is proving nigh on unshakeable.

In a game where the claret and amber forwards overpowered their Pill counterparts to let the Bailey Park backs run rampant, scrum-half Lewis Evans touched down for Aber's first and handed his team a lead they never relinquished.

Captain and hooker Gareth Williams added Aber's second, and the third came from Stuart Sherrad on the wing.

With the wind in their sails, Aber's fourth try of the game was probably their best, when a great dancing run by Stuart Davies saw him cut through the Pill defence and pass the ball over his shoulder to number eight Paul Cornock who crossed unhindered.

Stuart Davies was in action again when he went over for Aber's fifth and blindhead prop Owen Staphnil did the front row proud after starting a move that went through several pairs of hands before ending in his own for Aber's grand finale, which was duly converted, as were all the other tries in the game by Danny Haymond.

A pleased coach Tony Edwards told the Chronicle, "It was another solid performance from the lads and because we're sticking to the game-plan we've adopted in our training sessions, both the tries and the wins are stacking up.

"The forwards really took it to Pill and won plenty of ball for the backs to run with, and we've got some really handy players at the moment who relish the open spaces to work with.

"Dan Haymond has really settled in at outside half and was running the show on Saturday with plenty of nice play. The centres also run a lot of quality lines and put some nice phase play together.

"If I were to pick holes in what was a pretty solid effort, I would say my only gripe was the way we seemed to get a little too complacent in the second-half and allow Pill to steal a few soft tries, but that is something we can definitely improve on."

Next Saturday Aber will look to make it three out of three when they face the sterner test of Pontypool United away
