Dyfed Powys Police launches All Wales Anti Drink/Drug Driving Campaign
Drivers who risk lives when high on drink and drugs are being targeted by police this summer.
Thousands of motorists face being stopped by Gwent police in a month-long campaign coinciding with the European football championships.
Police are concerned that the Welsh national teams’ first major tournament since 1958 could tempt drivers to risk it on the roads after supporting their team.
Last year in Wales, officers carried out over 12,000 breath tests, of which over 300 roadside breath tests were positive.
A further 52 drivers were arrested for drug-driving, a relatively new offence.
Chair of Road Safety Wales Susan Storch said, “Road Safety Wales strives to remind road users of the risks and consequences.
“Unfortunately, despite education and warnings, too many drivers are prepared to risk driving whilst impaired by drink or drugs.
“Road Safety Wales is committed to reducing the number of road casualties caused by irresponsible behaviour and will continue to support our Police colleagues during this campaign and throughout the year.
“Drivers who choose to flout the law should realise that there is a strong chance that they will be detected and prosecuted and that the penalties will be severe.”
If you have information relating to someone you think is driving whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs, please contact Police on 101.
