Abergavenny-based Longtown Mountain Rescue Team has had a busy start to the year.

Team members joined colleagues from neighbouring mountain rescue teams on January 2 on two separate call-outs to Pen y Fan, near Brecon, to help injured walkers.

The following day team members joined a search in Talgarth for a missing runner and returned to help on Wednesday and again on Saturday. The search was finally called off when a body was discovered.

There was another call out on Thursday evening to help an injured mountain biker at Pontnewynydd, near Abersychan who had suffered leg injuries on a hillside west of the village. The casualty had been kept warm by his friends and carried part of the way off the hill until the rescue team arrived.

He was treated for leg injuries then stretchered off to a roadside ambulance and taken to Nevill Hall Hospital.

Luke Lewis, team leader of Longtown MRT, said, “It’s been a busy start to 2017 for the team. We’d like to thank members of the public for their continuing support without which we couldn’t continue doing the work we do.”
