Abergavenny Tennis Club recently held its annual club final day with an excellent display of close fought matches.

In the men’s singles Jeremy Callard retained his title but only after a hard fought dual against Jack Grayer who pushed him all the way with the match finally being decided by a championship tie break.

The Ladies’ Singles saw regular finalist Becky Rogers up against an in form Mary-Joen. With many long rallies and good tactical play, Mary-Joen sealed the victory in two sets.

Mary-Joan also prevailed in the Ladies’ veterans singles beating her double’s partner Mary Morgan to retain her title from last year.

In the mens’ vets singles, regular finalist Boy Barcinilla was piped to top honours this year by mens’ team captain Steve Sharp.

The various doubles’ events this year were preceded by pools of round robin matches and this proved a popular format offering great match play opportunity across the club.

The Mens’ doubles was a very close fought event this year with many matches being decided on tie breaks and the eventual winning partnership of father and son Jeremy and Ben Callard just coming home ahead 10-8 in the final championship tie break against Lewys Hurst and the big serving left hander Harry Boardman.

In the Ladies’ Doubles, defending champions Becky Rogers and Brenda Saunders found themselves pitted against singles winner Mary-Joan and her playing partner Mary Morgan.

The holders Becky and Brenda started strongly and although they faced a strong fight back in the second set they managed to secure the victory and retain their title.

The final match of the day was the hotly contested mixed doubles which found different combinations of earlier finalists being pitted against each other.

After a close first set the eventual champions Jeremy Callard and Brenda Saunders took top honours over the pairing of Becky Rogers and Jack Grayer.

During the event the audience were sustained by a sumptuous afternoon tea and tournament organiser Bill Rogers extended his thanks to all those who contributed and played so well to make it such an enjoyable tournament.
