Page family Taekwondo (PFTKD) have just returned from Swindon after competing in there first world championships competition.
The PUMA World championships (Professional Unification of Martial Arts) was held over two days with a total of 650 competitors, from a host of different countries.
PFTKD took seven fighters from the Hereford and Abergavenny clubs, and returned with a total of nine medals (two gold, five silver, two bronze) including two new world champions.
Abergavenny's Maddie Davies and Alex Lewis both held there own and came back with medals.
Competing in the black belt division on day one, Maddie entered the patterns division first and won a silver medal.
Patterns are a series of blocks and punches against an imaginary opponent, pre coordinated and with the difficulty level based on the experience of your grade. Black belt patterns consist of jump kicks, spinning kicks and various other hard combinations of movement that take skill, balance and self control to perform.
Maddie then unfortunately picked up and injury in the sparring section which meant she could not continue.
On day two Alex Lewis also competed in the patterns and went all the way to the final to narrowly miss out on a gold medal.
She then went on to compete in the sparring division and was at the last minute bumped up a weight category and fighting much larger opponents.
None the less Alex fought hard against much bigger fighters and reached the final. Fast footwork and great kicking ability saw Alex pick up a gold medal and become the PUMA World Champion for her division.
Both girls train very hard in a variety of different disciplines including Kickboxing and olympic style tae kwon do and thoroughly deserve their success.
Instructor Brennen Page said, "It's a fantastic achievement, the step up of competition was evident but the guys had prepared well and came back with plenty of silverware."
