ONCE again the Abergavenny Bowls Tourists returned from their annual trip to Torquay satisfied with their improved performance.

Playing against the Barwell touring side on both the Tuesday and Thursday morning sessions they achieved success on eight of the rinks but lost all four matches.

Whilst this might at first sight appear to be a less than significant performance, when the quality of the opposition is taken into account, it was a brilliant day’s bowling from the Abergavenny Squad.

The Barwell team from Leicester only play indoors giving them a big advantage over the Abergavenny Bowlers, who play mainly outdoors and only play the indoor game during the winter months.

The most successful Skip on tour was Brian Hughes who plays for Gilwern Bowls Club, closely followed by Abergavenny Bowls Club captain Gethin Hill.

Brian and Gethin not only played well against Barwell but were involved as Skips in a sensational victory over Kings Bowling Club of Torquay who boast a number of national and International bowlers in their ranks. They are the current holders of the National Top Club trophy having beaten teams from Bedfordshire, Northants and Berkshire to retain the cup.

Abergavenny won the match 63 shots to 38 and the top rink of Brian Hughes, Norman Doel, Tony Corfield and Ceri Clark won their rink by 27 shots to four. Well done them and all the other players in that winning side. Lynn Treloar becomes the first person to Captain a winning team in Torquay. Well done Lynn.

This year was by far the best performance by the Abergavenny tourists who have already started planning their visit next year.

The 2018 tour will take place between Monday, November 19 and Friday, November 23. Anyone interested in making the trip should contact organiser Maurice Padfield via email on [email protected] or ring 07968867749.
