Although inflation is no longer dominating the headlines, many families are still feeling the pressure on household budgets. The weekly shop costs more, household bills take a bigger share of our income and for some school holidays just bring extra costs rather than a chance to relax.
It is not only those who have traditionally needed support who are feeling the pressure. Circumstances change, unexpected bills arrive and finances simply don't stretch.
That's why I want to share a simple message: if times are tough, please don't struggle alone.
Across Monmouthshire there is a wide range of support available, often much closer than people realise. Through our Money Matters service, you can find advice and help with food, household bills, benefits, debt and other practical support, all gathered in one place.
Our Summer Savings programme brings together free and low-cost activities, food provision and support for families across the county. From community cafés and reading programmes to MonLife activities and free children's lunches, there are plenty of opportunities to help make the summer easier on family budgets.
An important part of this is our Food and Fun programme, running in schools throughout the holidays. It gives children the chance to enjoy healthy meals alongside sports, crafts and activities with friends. It good for young people while also helping families manage costs.
We have also introduced a network of Cool Spaces across the county. On hot days they offer somewhere comfortable to sit, enjoy a drink, read a book, meet friends or simply take a break from the heat. No purchase is required and no explanation is needed.
Community support continues to make a real difference. Last year, our Emergency Food Aid programme supported more than 3,700 people, while Warm Welcome spaces welcomed over 2,800 visitors. More than 700 volunteers gave their time to help others, showing the very best of our communities.
We are also continuing to tackle period poverty by providing free period products in schools and community locations across the county. Periods shouldn't be an additional financial burden, particularly for families already watching every penny.
What makes me most proud is that all of this is a genuine community effort. Volunteers, charities, schools, churches, community groups and council staff all play their part in supporting local people. A powerful example of Monmouthshire United.
So if things are a little tight at the moment, please don't struggle quietly. Visit our Money Matters pages, call 01633 644644 or pop into your local Community Hub.
Sometimes the most important thing to know is that help is closer than you might think.
