IT was a disappointing day of cricket for both Usk's first and second teams as they both fell foul of their Sully counterparts
On a dreary day down in Glamorgan, Sully won the toss and elected to bat. It was the hosts who got off to the better start as Jamie and Ryan Sylvester put on 71 for the first wicket.
Usk then captured both as Owen Watkins and Tom Lee each picked up a scalp.
At 83-2 after 15 overs, Usk were back in it; however this is as good as it got for the visitors. Sully took complete control of the game as Michael O'Shea (101), Lloyd Smith (36) and Gareth Sullivan (56*) led the hosts up to 297-4 after the allocated 50 overs, Watkins managing to pick up a second wicket.
In reply Usk got off to a reasonable start themselves as Oliver James (39) and Mark Tamplin (34) put on 69 for the first wicket inside the opening 10 overs. With James falling, Travis Townsend (22) then joined Tamplin and helped take Usk to 103-1 in the 18th over.
With both soon falling, Usk collapsed dramatically as only one other batsman managed to make double figures. With nearly 20 overs left of the innings Usk were dismissed for 142.
For Sully the Sylvester brothers and Tomos Evison all picked up three wickets.
Meanwhile back at the Athletic Club Ground Usk seconds at least pushed Sully all the way for a hard fought victory.
Captain for the day Jake Roderick won the toss and decided to bat first. This looked a good move as, despite the loss of an early wicket, Usk moved to 57 before their second wicket fell. Usk's proved a frustrating innings as useful rather than substantial partnerships were made. Neil Perrett (92) held everything together whilst he put on 49 with Mike Kear (25), and 70 with Ali Waldron (25). Gavin Jones then came in to smash a quick unbeaten 34 to allow the hosts to post 237-7 from their 50 overs.
Sully's pursuit of their target got off to the very worst start as Ali Waldron picked up a wicket from the very first ball of the innings. Matt Thomas (59) and Rhet Jones (45) then steadied the ship for the visitors as they posted 111 for the second wicket. Both then soon fell to the bowling of Dominic Rees. Sully found themselves on 116-3. Richard Jones (51) then came out to join Chris Thorne (49) and the pair wrested the initiative back as they put on 88 for the fourth wicket.
There were still one or two nervous moments for Sully as the pair fell as did one further wicket; however, the visitors reached their target with 15 balls and four wickets to spare. For Usk, Dominic Rees, Ali Waldron and Pat Rodden all picked up a brace of wickets.
There was at least some good news for Usk on Sunday, when the thirds won at home to Dinas Powys. Captain for the day Travis Townsend won the toss and chose to bat. Usk made a decent start as Pat Rodden (54) and Joe Peacock put on an opening stand of 60. With Alex Head (61) and Townsend himself (37), Usk made a healthy 243-9 from their 40 overs.
Dinas Powys reply got off to a sluggish start as the Usk bowlers kept things tight. After the first 10 overs the visitors had only managed to reach 20-0. Requiring just under 7.5 per over Dinas Powys began to attack, but also began to lose wickets.
They were soon in trouble and falling further behind an increasingly demanding run rate. They were eventually all out 90 runs short of their target. For Usk the pick of the bowlers were Pat Rodden and Russ Carter, who each finished with three wickets.
Usk first and second teams will be looking for their first league wins of the season when the firsts entertain Cardiff (last year's league champions) and the seconds travel to take on the same opponents. Play begins in both matches at 1:30pm. On Sunday, the firsts play host Hatherley & Reddings in the first round of the National Club Championship. Play begins at 2pm; whilst an Usk third team makes the short trip across to take on Pontnewynydd in a friendly. Play for this match starts at 2:30pm.
