Friends of talented football star 21-year-old Tom Baynton have paid tribute following his death in a car accident last week.
Mr Baynton from Gilwern died in a two-vehicle crash in Waun-y-Pound, Ebbw Vale on Friday night. Five others were injured in the accident, which is still being investigated by the police.
Mr Baynton, who played for Gilwern and District FC, was described as a 'star' and a 'legend' for his talents, and the local sporting community has come forward to offer condolences to his friends and family.
Malcolm Ewers, Secretary of the Gwent Central League, said, "On behalf of Gwent Central League Committee we want to pay our respects to Tom's friends and family."
A Facebook page has been set up in his memory, with over 2,200 people joining to leave messages of respect and tribute to the young man. On the site, Anthony Carrington of Gilwern FC wrote, "I will certainly miss your cheeky chops especially in the dressing room on a Saturday. Always a star and you will continue to be a star shining on those who loved you. Good night God bless."
A remembrance evening took place in Gilwern car park at the weekend for friends of Mr Baynton to light candles, and on the social networking site it was remarked how many turned up for him, and how loved and missed he will be.
Gwent Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the collision to ring 101 quoting log 459 29/11/13.
