Funding for a summer activity scheme for children was given the green light at an Abergavenny town council meeting last week.
Councillors agreed to funnel £5,000 into the project, subsidising places for children of families with low incomes to take part in swimming and sports camp-style activities.
The money will also go towards helping disabled children participate, paying for specialist sensory kits and disability training for eight new supervisors.
Members of the council agreed to provide the cash having been ‘heavily involved’ in similar events held during the summer recess last year.
The scheme will hand selected children an electronic access card loaded with credits to pay for activities such as swimming, sports days, and team games.
Mike Moran, community infrastructure co-ordinator at Monmouthshire County Council, said the scheme would run 19 free sessions for at least 80 children per day, which meant ‘remarkably good value’ at £2.60 per child.
