In a reverse of last week's close loss to Builth, Glangwryney managed to sneak a win against fellow basement boys Shobdon.

Losing the toss Mr Boswell and his team took to the field on a surprisingly sunny afternoon. Waiting on late arrivals who won't be named, (Nick Jones and Huw Morgans), Glangrwyney started undermanned but Ben Bowker (1/25) bowled economically and, along with brother Joe, made early inroads.

Apart from Shobdon's opening batsman Ian Probert it was slow progress with both Phill Bowker (3/37) and Tob Grubb taking wickets through the middle overs.

It was basically a one man show from Probert who reached a deserved hundred, being particularly dismissive against 'Grubb'elar' (1/89). He ended up scoring more than half of Shobdon's 200 with only two other batsmen reaching double figures.

The final over was especially frantic with Joe Bowker (5/45) taking four wickets in five balls. The Glangrwyney keeper took about a week to return to his feet after dropping a regulation catch on his hat-rick ball.

The 'Groin's' out-fielding was, generally, much improved with Nick Jones and Dennis Parker taking good boundary catches.

Glangrwyney started strongly with Nicky Pooler hitting his first ball for a Dorothy. The innings stuttered somewhat though with Pooler, Mike Parker and Joe Bowker all falling cheaply.

The in-form Grubb (59) batted sensibly and made use of the small boundaries and along with Nick Jones (36) and Rev. Lewis (36) proceeded to take Glangrwyney within touching distance of a vital win.

In 'Groin-esque' style the visitors tried their best to lose and it was down to the batting renaissance of Richard Ashe (26) to relieve the pressure crunching three maximums in quick succession.

The game wasn't over and, with Huw Morgans still in the hutch, the home side were always in with a chance but the cool heads of Geoff Holmes and Phill Bowker prevailed and Glangrwyney in the end won by two wickets.

This result will help Glangwryney retain their Division One status, with important home matches against Kington and Bosbury in the next two weeks.
