A MEETING to discuss the possible regeneration of Abergavenny town centre is being hosted by the Civic Society.
The area's Assembly Member, Nick Ramsay, will chair the meeting on February 11 and the discussion will focus on how Abergavenny can retain and enhance its competitive edge.
Mr Ramsay is the chairman of the Assembly's Enterprise and Business Committee and in January 2012, after extensive research, the committee published its report 'Regeneration of town centres', taking on board case studies of best practice around Wales.
Mr Ramsay will be presenting key findings from the report's 21 recommendations.
He says the report recognises that vital, vibrant town centres are at the heart of sustainable communities and are core to a healthy and prosperous Welsh economy. The challenge facing modern towns is that the High Street is no longer the prime retail space it once was due to an increase in online and out of town shopping and a change in consumer behaviour.
It concludes that to face these challenges requires a local, integrated and sustainable approach.
Fiona Beavan from Abergavenny Business Club will give the business and retail community's view while Dave Bevan, Head of Economy and Enterprise for Monmouthshire County Council will provide an insight into how the authority will support the business community and commit to revitalising Abergavenny's town centre.
A spokesman for Abergavenny Civic Society said that the meeting was not about any single issue but a debate on how the community as a whole can consider the opportunities and concerns for Abergavenny, a chance to explore the wider issues of town centre regeneration.
After the speakers have addressed the meeting, the audience will discuss the points raised and aim to identify a number of ways in which solutions to various issues could make a difference - leading to a better future for Abergavenny residents, traders and visitors alike.
The meeting will start at 7.30pm at St Michael's Centre, Pen-y-pound.
Non-members are very welcome although a small charge of £2 will be made which will be taken off an annual subscription if one is taken out.
