Goytre - 2
Treowen Stars - 2
DESPITE going 2-0 up early doors, a top of the tree Goytre outfit were forced to settle for a dreary draw after Treowen Stars bounced back to earn their share of the spoils.
Currently topping the table in Welsh League Division Three, Goytre entertained Treowen at Plough Road hoping to add to an impressive run of six wins in seven games.
The Goytre made a text-book start when goal machine Luke Prosser, who is now joint top of the 'Hot-Shots' chart alongside Monmouth Town's Matthew Bowen with 12, put them in the driving seat.
Kristian Wharton pounced to make it 2-0 and the game looked like it had a Goytre victory written all over it.
However the Stars had other ideas and stormed back in unstoppable fashion to make sure they enjoyed their bite of the cherry courtesy of strikes from Gary Evans and Lewis Coote.
Although Goytre are still sitting pretty at numero uno in the league, Saturday's result has allowed second-place Monmouth Town to inch ever closer with just two points separating the
teams.
Consequently Goytre will need to be operating at full throttle when they visit fifth-placed Briton Ferry Llanawel this Saturday.
Underwood Athletic - 0
Govilon - 4
GOVILON cruised through the first round of the John Payne Barber Gwent County Amateur Cup after putting four goals to no reply past Divison Three strugglers Underwood.
Govilon switched Richard McCarthy from his recent defensive role into the attack and he showed he had lost none of his scoring knack in racking up a hat trick.
His first chance came after ten minutes, but he failed to make full contact and might have rued the missed chance when Underwood, who were showing plenty of spirit, hit the post at the other end.
Halfway through the first half it was Leon Gilchrist who almost gave Govilon the lead, but his goal bound header was cleared off the line.
Two minutes later McCarthy struck when he found himself free on the edge of the box and drilled the ball into the corner of the net.
Rhys Whiteman was next to score for Govilon slotting home from close range, and then McCarthy added another when he scored from the tightest of angles.
In the second half Craig Norman had the chance to extend Govilon's lead but his shot was cleared off the goal line, and Rhys Whiteman almost grabbed another when his shot rebounded off the legs of Underwood's goalkeeper.
McCarthy hit a blistering drive just wide of the post, and caused Underwood further problems when he surged into the penalty area only to be felled. He got up to convert the penalty kick and put the game beyond Underwood's reach.
Prior to kick off there was a minutes silence in memory of former Govilon player Mr Archie Aubrey who passed away on November 4. The local football community will remember Archie as a very talented footballer. Govilon who now face three away league outings and will not play at home for the rest of the month. They travel to Newport to face Lliswerry on Saturday (k.o 2.00pm).
Conversely their table topping Gwent Central side, fresh from their 13-0 demolition of Race Utd are at home for each of the forthcoming Saturday's this month facing Usk Town on Saturday in the Open Cup (2.00pm).
Elsewhere in the first round of the cup, other local teams did not fare so well, as Mardy were beaten 6-2 by Marshfield and the Blaenavon Blues were thrashed 2-7 by Fleur-De-Lys Welfare.
Clydach Wasps were narrowly pipped to the post by Trethomas Bluebirds to the tune of 3-4, but the Abergavenny Thursdays did themselves proud with a 1-6 demolition job on Machen.
