Residents living near Grwyne Fawr reservoir have vented their anger about an illegal rave which began in the forestry commission car park near Pont Cadwgan in the early hours of Sunday.

Jo Lindsay-Jones told the Chronicle that from 2.30am onwards 'more than 2,000 people piled into the normally tranquil area'.

"They blocked the road, which is the only access local residents have. They abandoned their cars along the road and began their torrent of drinking, littering and horrendously loud music. And it was still going on at 11.30am!"

Jo says that, despite putting in calls to the police at 3am, 5am, 8am and 10am they had to endure a sleepless night with the rave music blaring out.

"That's not to mention the litter, damage, road obstruction and no doubt masses of human excrement that will be left behind by the ravers when they eventually decide to pack up," said Jo.

"Why should local residents have to suffer this anti social behaviour? It's unbelievable."

A spokesman for Gwent Police said: "We were called at 3.15am on Sunday regarding a gathering of about 250 people at Forest Coal Pit. After officers carried out a risk assessment they attended the scene. The organisers told them they planned to remain at the site until Tuesday but the officers successfully negotiated to have the site cleared.

"The music was turned off by early afternoon on Sunday and the gathering was over by 5pm. There were no issues with rubbish, no injuries and no arrests made. From our point of view this was regarded as a successful outcome."
