Monmouth MP David Davies has accused the Welsh Government of seeking snooping powers to spy on the people of Wales, following a tip-off from inside the Senedd.

The Conservative MP launched the attack after informed whispers said Assembly officials were pushing for surveillance powers to be devolved as part of the latest devolution settlement.

Mr Davies said powers to set up “GCHQ-style listening posts” went far beyond the remit of the Assembly.

“It is deeply concerning that the Welsh Government is seeking the right to snoop into every corner of our lives.

“The secretive way they have gone about trying to get control of surveillance powers in Wales will reinforce the concerns that many will have.

“We need to know what forms of surveillance the Assembly wants to be able to undertake, against whom, and for what purposes.
