Conservative sitting tenant David Davies has retained his hold on the Monmouth seat with a majority of more than 8,000.

Speaking as the result was announced Mr Davies thanked voters for returning him to the House of Commons and paid tribute to his fellow candidates for a good natured and well fought campaign.

Commenting on a momentous night for British politics and admitting there was confusion as to what was going on, Mr Davies said, "As a believer in democracy and as a supporter of democracy I know that if the Conservative party takes a bit of a thrashing from time to time, that is the price I’m willing to pay for living in a democracy and I’m sure we all agree with that.”
