Work on the next phase of an enhanced active travel route between Abergavenny and Llanfoist could begin this year, according to key stakeholders.

Construction of a £10 million footbridge over the River Usk between the two destinations is already underway, but a further £3.6 million boost in funding from the Cardiff Capital Region’s Regional Transport Fund has meant further improvements can be made.

It means a local route connecting to the bridge from Llanfoist itself can be built as Monmouthshire Council’s bid to reduce reliance on the car in the area continues. The road and footway layout from The Cutting and Waitrose Roundabout, along Merthyr Road towards the existing bridge will be changed.

Planned work includes accessible drop kerbs, new crossings, ‘better footway continuity’ and a shared use path will be built in the area. The road will also be resurfaced as part of the work.

“This is about making everyday journeys easier for local people. Whether residents are travelling to work, school, the shops or Castle Meadows, these improvements will help make walking, wheeling and cycling safer and more accessible,” said Cllr Sara Burch, Monmouthshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Rural Affairs, Housing and Tourism.

“I am pleased we are able to do the much-needed road resurfacing alongside the new pedestrian crossings and other improvements. There will be some disruption while works are carried out, but we’ll all see a big benefit when it’s completed.”

Construction of these additional links is currently scheduled to begin in winter this year and will run until Spring 2027. It is hoped that the work will help make everyday journeys easier for people travelling to Abergavenny town centre, Castle Meadows, local shops, schools, work and nearby communities.
