Upgraded tasers are to be rolled out to police officers in communities across Gwent, including Abergavenny.

Specially trained officers will soon have their existing X2 model tasers with the upgraded model, Taser 10.

The new device will gradually replace the current stock and contains a range of new features designed to provide officers with the chance to de-escalate threatening situations to ensure the safety of the public.

"By introducing the Taser 10, we’re equipping our officers with the latest technology to help keep the public safe,” said Superintendent Ryan Francis.

"We use Tasers to de-escalate and defuse potentially dangerous situations swiftly and safely when the use of force is considered appropriate, lawful and proportionate.”

“The new features on the Taser 10, such as the increased number of probes and its greater range, will assist our officers in these dynamic situations when the use of the device is considered necessary.”

Among the features of the new weapon is the ability to deploy ten individually targeted probes without the need to reload which enhances an officer’s ability to respond to an identified threat or multiple suspects.

Officers will also be able to make use of a longer range as well as better overall handling and safety mechanisms.

“The introduction of this new device will help our officers to keep the public safe by effectively tackling violent and weapon-enabled crime while maintaining public trust and confidence,” Superintendent Francis continued.

Instances in which a taser is used remain relatively low in Gwent. In 2025, there were 287 instances where at least one taser was deployed. But out of those, a taser was only discharged 23 times.

Officers will continue to train with the T10 device as part of a gradual rollout, but the first model was deployed in February this year, after approval from the Home Office in October 2025.
