AFTER almost 50 years of without a cinema, an audience of 200 recently packed into Usk's Memorial Hall for the town's first Silver Screen cinema night.

Mamma Mia! was Silver Screen Usk's first cinema night, welcomed by a a rapturous reception at the Memorial Hall

Usk Mayor councillor Tony Kear launched the film society's first event by presenting a cheque for £500 to Silver Screen's Chair, Kath Collis and other members of the committee.

Thanking the team for all their hard work, councillor Kear, who has supported the project from the start, also indicated Julian Burton and John Jones, the technical team, poised beside the state-of-the-art digital projector.

Councillor Kear also reminded the audience of Usk's earlier cinema which ran during the 1950's and '60s in Llanbadoc's "Red Shed" with its characteristic seating taken from old buses.

Inviting members of the audience to share their many colourful memories of the Red Shed, he encouraged Silver Screen Usk to inspire future "fond memories" of its own.

Members of the committee and helpers toasted the society's future as they cleared up at the end of their first highly successful evening.

Silver Screen Usk's next cinema event will be The Edge of Love starring Keira Knightley, Sienna Miller and Matthew Rhys, on Thursday, November 20 at 7.30pm in the Memorial Hall, Usk.
