THE driver of a lorry that crashed at Llanellen on Monday morning (July 16) suffered a stroke behind the wheel before crashing into a garden wall.

Travelling in the direction of Abergavenny on the A4042 on it's way to a factory in Ebbw Vale, the driver, a Slovenian national, swerved over the road before ploughing into a lamppost and garden wall taking down power cables.

Witnesses told the police the lorry was swerving over the road for a while before it crashed causing the cab of the lorry to overturn.

A nurse passing the scene administered first aid before paramedics arrived taking him to Royal Gwent Hospital where he is in a serious by stable condition.

A number of houses were left without power for four hours as Western Power engineers repaired to cables and Monmouthshire County Council cleaned up the diesel which spilled onto the road.

The A4042 between the Hardwick roundabout and the Mamhilad roundabout was closed most of the day for a specialist firm to recover the lorry but opened at 6.30pm the same day.

Inspector Huw Watkins of Gwent Police said, "Thankfully this was the only vehicle involved because at 9am in the morning this is a very busy stretch of road. This could have been a lot more serious."

Gwent Police are appealing to anyone who saw the white Slovenian lorry, carrying the name 'Topp' on its front, sides and back, or those people who reported the incident to contact the collision investigation unit on 01633 838111.

On the same road at Goytre a van overturned on Tuesday morning (July 17) near the Old Pound Garage.

A telephone pole was brought down and diesel spilled over the road, no one was injured.
