A local beer start-up will be making its debut at the Abergavenny Food Festival this weekend, as two ‘unconventional’ brews go on offer to the public for the first time.
Güt was founded by master brewer and certified beer judge Josh Bray and entrepreneur George Ingledew. The pair began experimenting with the yeast in Josh’s garage in 2024. The resulting IPAs make Güt the first UK brewer (and possibly the first in the world!) to use Saccharomyces boulardii.
“Güt is a Monmouthshire company, so launching ten minutes from home feels right< said George Ingledew.
“Abergavenny brings together people who care about taste, provenance and new ideas. We could not ask for a better first crowd.”
Two new beers will be available to try at the festival, including a 2.9 per cent session beer and a 0.5 per cent alcohol free beer. Both beers are unfiltered and unpasteurised, so live cultures remain in the can. Both must be kept chilled. The beers are contract-brewed and canned in the North of England, but the promised signature taste was conceived right here in rural Monmouthshire.
Güt IPA is light and hazy, with citrus, gentle tropical fruit, a touch of pine and a soft, rounded body.
Güt Alcohol Free IPA at 0.5% ABV is clean and refreshing, with lemon, grapefruit, tropical fruit and a hint of pine.
James Bray said, “Brewers usually choose a yeast because they know exactly how it behaves. We started with one that demanded a different approach. We had to learn how to brew with it, keep it alive and still make a fantastic IPA that tastes brilliant.”
“Now we get to put a cold can into people’s hands and see what they think.”
