LLANTILIO Crossenny WI is the oldest group in Gwent and so they celebrated in style at their 90th birthday party this month.

More than 70 attended and although it was a bit of a squash and a squeeze, it was a great mix of present and past members and many from WIs in the area.

Entertainment was provided by Dee and John "The Acoustics" who had selected songs from World War I to present day and invited everyone to join in. Rose Roberts, the president, welcomed everyone and picked out some interesting anecdotes from the past.

She directed guests to look at an exhibition of photos and memorabilia, which had been put together by members of Llantilio Crossenny WI Committee. Pam Wightman from County Executive Committee gave a short address and was particularly complimentary about Llantilio Crossenny's winning entry in the County Competitive "Ice and Fire".

She said that the judges had felt the standard achieved was extremely high, so members are very hopeful that Gaynor, Pauline and Rose will have success at the National Competition at the Royal Welsh Show next month.

Jeannette Hood, the retired WIA, finished proceedings sharing her personal memories of Llantilio Crossenny and gave the toast with champagne and bucks fizz. Everyone enjoyed a scrumptious supper, provided by all Llantilio Crossenny members.

The next meeting on July 8 is the Summer Outing to Ochran Mill Garden Llanover, followed by a meal at the Lamb and Flag. New members would be welcomed and we will be leaving Llanvapley at 5.30pm on the Grassroots bus.
