Goytre - 0

Cwmaman Institute - 1

IT was a case of a good performance, but bad result for Goytre on Saturday, as the Plough Road outfit slumped to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Cwmaman Institute.

The tone of the game was really set in the first five minutes when Goytre's Kevin Wallace was injured whilst making a tackle.

With Wallace off the field the visitors took a quick free kick. The resulting ball was put into the box, but Matthew Cameron's clearance didn't work out the way Goytre had hoped and it was diverted past keeper Gareth Williams for an own goal.

Club chairman Paul Greenhalgh told the Chronicle, "It was absolute gutting to concede so early on and in such a fashion. However, try as we might for the remainder of the match, it was one of those days when we just couldn't hit the back of the net."

Matthew Cameron tried to make amends for his earlier error with a shot shortly after, but unfortunately it just flew over the top of the bar.

In a game he'd probably like to forget, Cameron was given another chance from a Craig Jollife corner to put Goytre level, but his diving header from four yards out also fell short of the mark.

Just before half-time Carl Evans also had an opportunity to strike, but his shot just went wide.

Greenhalgh added, "We were quite buoyant going into the second-half, because we had performed well, and shortly before the interval our keeper had made a cracking save to keep us in it to win it."

Into the second half and for the first 20 minutes all play was confined to the centre of the park.

The midfield deadlock was eventually broken when some deft interplay between Jollife and Evans, allowed Evans to break forward, but his shot from outside the box was saved by the Cwmaman keeper.

Substitute Graham Mason nearly equalised when he latched onto a poor clearance, advanced forward, and beat the keeper, but in keeping with the rub of the green on the day, his shot was fated to just go wide.

In the last ten minutes Goytre literally set up camp outside the Cwmaman penalty area , but further efforts were all in vain in a match they never seemed destined to win.
