Govilon - 4

Spencer Youth and Boys - 0

GOVILON secured three points and kept a clean sheet for the second successive Saturday following their 4-0 rout over Spencer Youth and Boys.

Leon Gilchrist spurned a good early chance before Dean Morgan was felled in the penalty box and the ref had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.

Morgan himself got up to convert the spot kick, albeit with the aid of the post. Craig Norman, now a regular in the Gwent County FA squad, almost doubled Govilon's lead when his power header crashed against the bar, ten minutes in.

Not to be denied, in the next minute, Norman unleashed a drive from fully thirty metres out which left Luke Lewis in Spencer's goal, helpless.

Jamie Laurent went close with a free kick which skimmed the bar and, Dean Morgan, let through after a defensive slip, struck the post, after which Lewis made a point blank save to prevent Govilon extending their lead.

Govilon's next attack brought more reward, when Leon Gilchrist won the ball in midfield with a strong tackle, and set Dean Morgan free who made no mistake in beating Lewis.

Gilchrist almost got on the score sheet when Morgan returned the compliment, but his tap-in was ruled offside, as the score remained 3-0 at half time.

Halfway into the second half Gilchrist got onto the end of a defence splitting pass by Craig Norman and had no trouble in scoring.

Dean Morgan got his head to a Ryan Smith cross and although the ball landed in the net, referee Lewis adjudged the effort offside and denied him his hat trick.

Leon Gilchrist almost added to his total but was foiled by a brilliant save from Lewis, while Govilon had Aaron Davies to thank for a goal line clearance to keep their clean sheet intact.

In the closing stages Craig Thomas shot narrowly wide for Govilon.

Govilon are next in action at home to Lliswerry on Wednesday, March (kick-off 6.00pm) whilst their Gwent Central side uses Pen-y-pound to stage a postponed fixture against Cwmffrwdoer tonight with a 6.30pm kick-off.

Blaenavon Blues - 2

Chepstow Town - 2

BLAENAVON Blues welcomed Chepstow Town to the Memorial ground on Saturday with both teams looking to secure three points for very different reasons.

Chepstow needed the points to stay in the hunt for the league title while the Blues needed the points to pull away from the division one drop zone.

Chepstow went into this fixture as red hot favourites after winning the last three encounters between the clubs, but the young Blues sides fielding only two players over the age of thirty, outplayed their visitors during the opening 45 minutes, and raced into a two goal lead, thanks to goals from Matthew Cox and a Craig Tanner penalty, taking the Blues wing back to four goals in two games.

Chepstow came back into the game with ten minutes of the first half remaining forcing Lee Jones into making a great save low down to his left.

Unfortunately for the Blues, Chepstow did get one back before half time, when experienced captain Matty Owen fired home from close range.

Chepstow came out for the second half all guns blazing with the Blues defending superbly, forcing Alex Bull to produce one of his best performance's for the first team, while Blues skipper and sweeper Ryan Huish was a worthy man of the match.

Town did get there reward for a lot of pressure with a hotly disputed goal. The Blues defence appealed for an offside which didn't arrive and former Cwmbran Town front man Mark Dunn fired home.

With 20 minutes remaining both sides could see an opportunity to take all three points.

As Chepstow came at the Blues they left large gaps in their defence, where Brad Jones who had an excellent game playing out of position as a striker and Josh Bull who worked hard all afternoon were unlucky with a number of chances to take the Blues into the lead again.

A draw was probably a fair result on the day and a point lifts the Blues up a position in the league while this draw leaves Chepstow with a mountain to climb if they want to win the league. All in all great advert for Gwent County football.

The Blues are next in action on Wednesday, March 30, away to Torfaen rivals Coed Eva Athletic. Kick off is at 6pm.
