Plans to merge three primary schools in south Powys to create a new primary school could go out to consultation if the county council’s Cabinet gives the go-ahead later this month.

Powys County Council wants to merge Mount Streets Infants School, Mount Street Junior School and Cradoc C.P. School to create a new primary school as part of Transforming Education plans for the Brecon catchment area.

As part of the plans, which could see the new primary school operate from the three current sites from September 2022, the council also wants to build 21st Century facilities for the new school on the former Brecon High School site.

The plans will help the council deliver its Strategy for Transforming Education in Powys, an ambitious 10-year strategy that was approved earlier this year (April).

On Tuesday, December 15, Cabinet will be asked to start formal consultation on the proposal.

Cllr Phyl Davies, Cabinet Member for Education, said: “One of the aims in our Strategy for Transforming Education in Powys is to improve the learner entitlement and experience for all our learners.

“We are also committed to providing world-class facilities that will our learners and teachers thrive and reach their potential.

“I believe that our plans for the Brecon catchment area will help us deliver our strategy and improve the education entitlement and experience for future learners.

“I am recommending to Cabinet that we start formal consultation on the proposal to merge Mount Street Infants School, Mount Street Junior School and Cradoc C.P. School to create a new primary school that would operate from the current three sites.

“If we are successful in securing Welsh Government 21st Century Schools funding for new facilities, which could be built on the former Brecon High School site, then the intention is for the proposed new primary school to move into the new facilities when they are built.”
