Govilon - 8
Cromwell - 3
LAST season's Gwent County top goal-scorer Dean Morgan fired home four goals for Govilon on Saturday in their victory over Cromwell.
Goal machine Morgan struck first after 15 minutes when Richard McCarthy's strong tackle won the ball in midfield and he sent Morgan away to round goalkeeper Mike Little in trademark fashion before firing into an empty net.
He scored again after 23 minutes, latching on to a weak Cromwell back-pass before shooting past Little.
Cromwell fought back immediately after this set-back, and it took a brave point blank save at the feet of Cromwell's Ian McLeod by Govilon's goal-keeper Morrison to keep his goal intact. Morgan completed his hat-trick after half an hour when Jamie Laurent set Morgan free to beat Little, and slide the ball home with no pace but pin-point accuracy to creep in close to the post.
Morgan's strike partner, Richard McCarthy made the score 4-0 a minute later after confusion in the Cromwell defence presented him with an open goal.
Undaunted, Cromwell came back strongly hitting the post with a header which Morrison pushed to safety. The visitors then fired in two efforts from successive corners which McCarthy and then Matthew Ham cleared off the goal-line.
The ever improving Matthew Stevens returning to full fitness rounded off the first half rout with a blistering 25 yard strike which beat Little.
At the re-start Cromwell immediately pulled back a goal and quickly doubled their score before Dean Morgan netted again to give the game a 6-2 score line.
More goals from Govilon's mid-fielder Jamie Laurent and defender Jamie Wilkins saw Govilon extend their lead before Cromwell's Olly Anthony let fly with a thunderbolt to give the Newport side some consolation.
This win entails that Govilon maintain their table topping position seven points clear of nearest rivals Fairfield Utd who have two games in hand.
Next Saturday Govilon play Fairfield away with a 3.00pm kick off.
