ABERGAVENNY'S Becky James has been named as the Welsh Home Nation ambassador in the lead up to next year's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The four sporting ambassadors - promoted by energy company SSE one of the official partners of the Games - were revealed today by Sir Chris Hoy with each encouraging the public to support their Home Nation.

Sir Chris will lead SSE's Home Nation ambassadors as they go for gold at Glasgow 2014 and with Glasgow 2014's sport programme having the largest number of fully integrated Para-Sports medal events in Commonwealth Games history, Becky will be joined in her new role by Paralympic champion Aled Davies

SSE is also an official partner of all the four Home Nation teams through their four sub-brands: Southern Electric (ENG),  SWALEC (WAL), Scottish Hydro (SCOT) and Airtricity (NI). Each ambassador will use these relationships to encourage the public to support their Home Nation.

To underpin its commitment to the Games, over the next four years SSE will also support the development of a group of young athletes who have been tipped as future sporting stars.

The 50 SSE 'Next Generation' ambassadors will receive funding, mentoring and access to state-of-the-art facilities in a bid to help fulfil their full sporting potential and create a living legacy for sport as a result of the Games.

Speaking about his SSE ambassador role, Sir Chris Hoy, also an Official Ambassador of Glasgow 2014, said: "I have fond memories of the Commonwealth Games as I won the first gold medal of my career at Manchester 2002.

"It is a great opportunity for everyone to experience the excitement of world class live action at the largest multiple sport event ever to be held in Scotland. I'm really looking forward to mentoring the SSE Next Generation athletes.

" It is crucial for each home nation to unite and show their support for these athletes before, during and after Glasgow 2014 - I know from personal experience how important that support can be."

Wendy Barbour, SSE Director of Commonwealth Games and Sponsorship, said: "We are very proud to be associated with Glasgow 2014. Having customers and employees in Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland, we are really looking forward to helping make these Games come alive for them and their communities.

"We are also excited to be working with our talented ambassadors to ensure this is an inspiring Commonwealth Games for every home nation and to be a part of what is set to be a fantastic Games experience."

All of SSE's ambassadors will be urging their home nation to build upon the momentum of London 2012 to ensure Glasgow 2014 is the greatest Commonwealth Games to date.
