Cake lovers and charity givers teamed up on May Day Bank Holiday for a ‘bakelicious’ day at the 5th Great Abergavenny Bake Off held at Abergavenny Cricket Club.
There was a festival atmosphere, with afternoon tea enjoyed by more than 200 cake lovers and cake baking demonstrations, children’s workshops, games, auctions and raffles.
A new feature for 2016 was a cake demonstration by Andi Silcox of Cake and Jam Designs, which was then copied by four willing volunteers.
A brilliant performance by the Abergavenny Tenovus Sing With Us Choir rounded off the event.
There were 57 entries for the cake baking competitions (28 of which were junior bakers) and results were as follows:
Celebration Cakes: 1, Sarah Neale – The Forest; 2, Florence Davies – Golden Feather; 3, Morgan King – Chocolate Explosion.
Judged by Odette Phillips of For the Love of Cake.
Traditional Bakes: 1, Catrin Davies (Lemon Drizzle Cake); 2, Sorrel Jones (Victoria Sponge Cake); 3, Sheelagh Kerry (Bara Brith).
Judged by Simon King of 1861 Restaurant.
Cupcakes: 1, Rachel Callender (Lemon Meringue Pie Cupcakes); 2, Myfanwy Hywells (Carrot and Walnut Cupcakes); 3, Catrin Davies (Beelicious Cupcakes).
Judged by Jan Howells of the Victorian Tea Rooms.
Junior Baker (7 years and under): 1, Tom King (Leon the Ladybug; 2, Erin and Rhys Williams (Monkey Muffins); 3, Aalin Quirk (Mini Victoria Sponge Cakes).
Judged by Emmeline Vieregge of Emmeline’s Homebaking.
Junior Baker (8 to 12 years): 1, Isabella Moyle (Lemon Bee Heaven); 2, Evie and Holly Atkins (Pinata Cake); 3, Ella Rose Worthing (Queen of Hearts).
Judged by Kirsty Thomas of Cactus Productions, who work on a number of TV shows including BBC’s Saturday Kitchen.
In total more than £2,000 was raised for Cancer Research UK, Sarcoma UK and Tenovus.
The organisers are grateful for the continued support of local businesses and organisations, including the judges and demonstrators, Abergavenny Cricket Club, Seargeant Brothers Printers Limited, Cooks Galley and Abergavenny Fire Station.
