A group from Abergavenny has raised hundreds of pounds for charity by completing a sponsored walk around the town earlier this year.

Member of The Brighter Days Social Club celebrated their achievement at Empowerment Oasis, on Tudor Street, at their first anniversary party last Friday. The group was able to present a cheque for almost £700 to a representative from the Velindre Cancer Charity, with the ambition of helping staff and patients at the new ‘Velindre@Nevill Hall’ radiotherapy unit in Abergavenny, which opened last year.

The group, which was started by Kim Catlee, continues to grow and provides a space for vulnerable adults with learning difficulties to socialise and engage with community activities. They also go on regular trips and pride themselves on making a difference where they live.

“Brighter Days Social Club raised an incredible £671.25 for Velindre by doing sponsored walk at the end of April this year,” Kim told The Chronicle.

“Kylie, from Velindre, gratefully received the cheque to help the wonderful staff and patients at the new Velindre unit at Nevill Hall, a cause we all thought was very important and would help the town.”

“Today was also our first anniversary since I started the social group. It has been a great success so far, we’ve enjoyed a day out to Barry Island and next month we are going to West Midlands Safari Park!”
