As part of Keep Wales Tidy Week, a new initiative, Abergavenny is not an Ashtray will be launched on 18 September. This project resulted from the Abergavenny & District Civic Society's 'Good, Bad and Ugly' competition held last year where smoking related litter was frequently identified as Bad or Ugly by competitors of all ages

The Civic Society has designed a poster which will be displayed around the town and in selected outlets free stubby containers will be provided for smokers to put their cigarette ends in rather than throwing them on the ground.

This project has come together as a result of the Civic Society joining forces with Keep Abergavenny Tidy, Abergavenny Town Council and Monmouthshire County Council. The event will take place in Red Square, from 10:00am until 3:00pm on 18 September. Keep Wales Tidy, NHS Wales Public Health and the Neighbourhood Policing team will be joining us on the day.

The NHS Wales Public Health team will provide information and advice for those who would like to quit smoking. Neighbourhood Police officers will be on hand to provide information about the current enforcement strategies in respect of littering and the Council will be explaining exactly how much of their budget goes on clearing up litter.

If you like to get involved and help us with this project by either, nominating a "grotspot" or if you are willing to put up a poster and house a box of free"stubbies" where the public can access them, please contact Tom at [email protected]">[email protected] or Tel:02920 726988

All of the partners in this project want Abergavenny to be a cleaner, healthier place to visit, live and work in.
