EUROPE’s longest water slide could be created at Abergavenny if an innovative partnership between supermarket giant Morrisons and Abergavenny Town Council is given the go-ahead.
Under plans revealed exclusively to the Chronicle today, a 270 metre waterside would start from the roof of the recently opened Morrisons store on Park Road and wind its way around the building before crossing the busy main road and emerging into a state of the art water park to be created in Bailey Park.
Thrill seekers will be able to experience the twists and turns of the exhilarating slide while enjoying unforgettable views of the famous seven hills of Abergavenny thanks to the slide’s unique see-through construction with the polycarbon tubes specially created for the project by French water slide pioneers Quelle Blague.
“We have taken into consideration negative comments about the height of the new Abergavenny store and tried to do something to make it fit in more with the landscape,” said the supermarket company’s chief designer Paul Maleg
“We’ve seen similar water slides built elsewhere but I think this will be the first time one will actually start in a supermarket,” he said.
“We’re expecting sales of bathing costumes and verrucca socks to go through the roof as people seize the opportunity to go for a slide before doing their weekly shop,” added Mr Maleg.
Clerk to Abergavenny Town Council Jo King said the scheme had the full backing of the authority, which was hoping to be able to secure funding via the National Lottery.
“The project is likely to cost in the region of £30 million and would allow us to re-develop the old pool area at Bailey Park. We already have a lot of interest being expressed from hot Bovril sellers from all over Wales,” she said.
