A MOTORCYCLE escort by Velothon support staff was necessary to assist a young girl who lost consciousness on the slopes of the Sugarloaf in the searing heat on Sunday.

Longtown Mountain Rescue were called out to help the fourteen-year-old from London who was treated on scene by a team doctor before being stretchered to a waiting Maritime and Coastguard Agency helicopter and flown to Nevill Hall Hospital.

Longtown MRT team leader Luke Lewis stated, ‘When we arrived she was conscious and we wish her a speedy recovery. We would also like to extend our thanks to Waitrose for providing much needed food and drink to our hot and thirsty team afterwards.

‘Big thanks to Velothon for providing a motorbike escort for one of our team members who was blocked in by today’s event. Every team member is vital in an urgent situation like this.’

The team was called out again on Monday afternoon to help an injured paraglider on Hay Bluff. The 45-year-old man, from London, had suffered a lower leg injury after crash landing at more than 2,000ft.

He was treated at the scene by a team doctor and then taken by stretcher down to the road.

A waiting ambulance took him on to Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny.
