Residents are more likely to be burgled in the warm summer months, police have warned.
Gwent Police issued some tips last week, as officers warned of a likely spike in burglaries over the summer period.
Locking windows and doors, and keeping car keys out of plain sight will help avoid becoming a victim of crime, police said.
Officers also recommended sheds are kept locked, and valuable items are not left on display outside. Residents should also keep their front door locked when enjoying the sunshine in the garden.
Although commonplace, police also advised to avoid posting details about upcoming holidays on social media, or tagging oneself at the airport or holiday locations whilst away, as this information offers a green light to potential burglars.
DCI Nick Wilkie said, “Understandably during this warm period we want to open the windows wide and let some fresh air into our homes, however, burglars are opportunists and many just look for an easy target. By taking a few, simple precautions, residents can reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim of burglary.
“We are continuing to take a proactive approach to arresting those responsible for committing burglaries. For example, Integrated Offender Management Teams around the force area concentrate on the minority of repeat offenders who commit the majority of crimes. This includes prosecuting people, and then working with partner agencies such as Probation on their release from custody to encourage them to take a more positive path.”
