The prolonged spell of dry weather is set to come crashing down this week as heavy rainfall and thunderstorms bring a risk of further disruption.

A yellow weather warning will be in force between 6am and 10pm tomorrow (Thursday) with up to 50mm of rain expected over a twelve hour period in certain places. In comparison, Abergavenny and the surrounding area of Gwent recorded just 2.4mm of rainfall for the whole of July.

Thunderstorms and heavy rain could cause some disruption to public transport and driving conditions could become difficult with motorists advised to take extra care. But the rainfall - which may sound welcome to some - could be hazardous due to the sheer dryness of the ground, making flooding a possibility.

Although a yellow weather alert means the worst case scenario has a low likelihood and medium impact, people are being urged to prepare for certain instances.

According to the Met Office, people should consider whether they are at risk of flash flooding and prepare to protect their property and themselves. Flooding of homes and businesses could happen quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.
