Abergavenny Cricket Club’s Junior Section launches this Friday (April 8) at 6pm with a registration night at Avenue Road.

The club runs sessions for juniors aged 7-16 years old and is looking to build on a successful 2015 season that saw its U13 and U15 sides reach the semi final stage of the Gwent Shield while also finish a creditable third in their respective leagues.

Abergavenny junior players have been working hard throughout the winter month in the club’s junior academy.

Eight of these players have already been selected to represent Gwent Young Cricketers in 2016. They are Tom Norton at U10, Alex Holmes, Hugo Caldicott and Anton Lodder at U12, while Morgan Bevans, Dylan Beaumont-Welsh, James Rhydderch-Roberts and Meici Jones all gained selection for the U14 team.

Head Coach and 1st XI Captain Geraint Leach said, “It’s great to see so many young players gain selection for the Gwent squads this season and it shows that the club is starting to develop some real talented junior players who will hopefully follow in the footsteps of previous club members and push to play county cricket.

“We also have a couple of players in the final trials for national selection so hopefully they’ll be rewarded for all the hard work they have put in over the winter.’

The junior academy runs every week throughout the summer so players can have dedicated sessions to help develop their game and help them reach their goals. In addition to this, Abergavenny CC also run a U11 Technical Coaching Programme which allows junior players to be coached on a one to one basis to help develop their technique and experience against a hard ball.

Friday nights is the official club training night and from 6-7.30pm each week, children can come along and experience the game with a number of ECB qualified coaches in attendance.
